How to practise
speaking French alone.
Start with a question about your life. Answer aloud, check one phrase, then answer again in a different way. Here is a five-minute routine you can try now.
A practice guide by tranzlato · 11 September 2026
One minute: say something true about today
Pick two sentences you can finish. Speak them before looking up every unfamiliar word. Keep the first version short; you can add detail on the next attempt.
- Aujourd’hui, je… Today, I…
- J’ai envie de… I feel like…
- Ce soir, je vais… This evening, I’m going to…
For example: « Aujourd’hui, je travaille à la maison. Ce soir, je vais regarder un film. » That means: “Today, I’m working at home. This evening, I’m going to watch a film.” Change the details so the answer is yours.
Two minutes: answer, then change the answer
Say your answer before opening each example. Then close it and answer again with a different detail. The examples are possibilities, not the only correct answers.
Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire le week-end ?
What do you like doing at the weekend?
J’aime me promener et retrouver mes amis.
I like going for walks and meeting my friends. Now name a different activity.
Tu préfères cuisiner ou manger au restaurant ? Pourquoi ?
Do you prefer cooking or eating at a restaurant? Why?
Je préfère cuisiner parce que j’aime essayer de nouvelles recettes.
I prefer cooking because I like trying new recipes. Try the opposite answer and give your own reason.
Qu’est-ce que tu vas faire demain ?
What are you going to do tomorrow?
Demain, je vais faire les courses, puis appeler ma sœur.
Tomorrow, I’m going to do the shopping, then call my sister. Replace both activities with your plans.
One minute: make one sentence clearer
Choose a sentence you hesitated over. Check its wording in a trusted dictionary, with a teacher, or with your tutor. Ask about that sentence rather than asking for a score for your whole level.
« J’aime le café parce que c’est bon. »
I like coffee because it tastes good. For a concrete grammar example, « parce que » introduces the reason here. If you said « J’aime le café parce c’est bon », retry it with « parce que ». Then give a different reason.
To check a phrase and hear a model voice, you can use Read. Listening is a reference, not a pronunciation assessment. A correct-looking transcript does not prove that every sound was pronounced correctly.
One minute: finish without the hints
Look away from the examples. Say two sentences about your day and ask one question. If you get stuck, shorten the sentence and try again.
Write down one phrase you needed help with. At your next practice, try it before opening your notes. Use a simple record: “said it alone,” “needed a hint,” or “try again.” This is a record of an attempt, not a test score.
When you want someone to answer back
Solo practice lets you take your time. A conversation adds something different: another speaker asks a question you did not prepare. You can practise with a language partner, a teacher, or an AI tutor.
In tranzlato, open Speak and start a session. You can say hello and talk normally. For extra support, try asking: « Pose-moi une question simple à la fois. » It means “Ask me one simple question at a time.”
- Peux-tu parler plus lentement ? Can you speak more slowly?
- Peux-tu répéter la question ? Can you repeat the question?
- Comment dit-on… en français ? How do you say… in French?
Speak offers French and English captions and feedback after your session. AI feedback can be wrong, so check corrections that seem unclear. This routine is optional: you do not need a document or a prepared topic to have a conversation.
